Reedsy, a site that provides tools for authors, also provides a weekly writing contest with no entry fee. Each week, a new series of prompts based on a selected topic are released with submissions due on Friday, or one week from the day the prompts are provided.
Prize money of $50.00 is awarded to one winning entry, and submissions are typically required to be 1000-3000 words in length, though the specific guidelines are included with the weekly prompt.
This continual contest provides writers with a concrete way to break out of a writer’s block while also encouraging the habit of consistent writing. It’s an interesting concept. Personally, I spend the entire weekend thinking of different angles I can take with the prompt and then start drafting a submission in the beginning of the week. Sometimes I even actually complete a full short story and submit!
The routine has helped more than anything else I have in my arsenal for blasting through writer’s block, and while I would love to say I have been submitting weekly, that would simply be a lie.
If you aren’t much for writing contests, Reedsy is still worth a look. It’s like a buffet of writing resources.
